Ouch.
With all the hits newspaper companies are taking, they've prided themselves at least on their legendary work habits. Like, not missing a deadline.
But check out this deadline headline: "Newseum Opening Postponed"
That's right, the Gannett-fueled museum (let's hope it's not a mausoleum) to all things newspaper missed its deadline.
Originally scheduled to open Oct. 15, it's been delayed, and no new date announced:
Construction progress on the 643,000-square foot Newseum complex “is not moving as quickly as the contractor or we expected it to,” said Newseum President Peter S. Prichard. “The Newseum is an extremely complicated, high-tech, one-of-a-kind building.”
(Kind of sounds like an explanation of why the new content management system is not yet quite ready for prime time, doesn't it?)
That's the kind of stories daily newspapers like to jump on when city or county officials miss their deadlines, excorating the crats in way too many inches for their indolence.
I'm still not sure if the place is going to be a wow, a Hall of Fame for those of us who love newspapers, or an out-of-touch memorial to what once was. Here's a sneak.

I love the idea of celebrating news and inspiring new generations of news gatherers and producers. But The Newseum concept is seriously flawed. In its last incarnation, it was mostly a tribute to the greedy press barons. It was a hateful thing. I hope they get it right this time. btw $12 is a lot to pay in a city that has all the free Smithsonians. Only the Spy museum can get away with charging....

I thought the Newseum was funded by the Freedom Forum? I don't think Gannett has anything to do with it.
Ken Doctor reply: The Freedom Forum is the main funder of the Newseum, and it's a successor foundation of the Gannetts. For more background:
